How to Build a Personalised Product Demo in 4 Steps
If your demo is the same for every visitor, you're asking each of them to do the translation work. "How does this apply to me?" is a lot to expect from someone who's still deciding whether to care.
Personalisation removes that effort. Here's a straightforward four-step way to build it.
Step 1: Decide who you're talking to
Start with a short list of roles, maybe three. For each, write down their top use cases and what they'd judge you on: time to value, ease of integration, return on investment.
This is the foundation. If it's vague, everything built on top of it will be too. A quick sanity check helps: ask someone on your sales or customer success team whether the personas match the people they actually meet.
Step 2: Map the paths
Now build a route through the demo for each role. Use simple conditions based on signals like company size, industry or deal stage, so the most relevant features come first and the unrelated ones get skipped.
Shorter is fine. A focused ten-minute path beats a complete forty-minute tour every time.
Step 3: Add variables and an AI assistant
Variables let the demo respond to the buyer. If someone says they care about onboarding speed, lead with that. If they're evaluating a larger team, show scale and bulk setup.
The AI assistant covers everything else. Give it a tidy knowledge base covering the usual questions on security, compliance and integration timelines, and set clear limits on what it can and can't answer. Inconsistent answers do more damage than no answers.
Step 4: Watch, learn, repeat
Track how long people stay, how deep they go, what they ask and where they leave. Test different paths against each other. If engagement goes up but trial sign-ups don't, the problem is probably in the handover from demo to trial, not the demo itself.
Common mistakes
- Choosing the wrong persona and not noticing
- Showing too many metrics at once
- Letting the assistant answer without guardrails
- Skipping a test run with people from different teams
A realistic starting point
Don't try to personalise everything. Pick one buyer type, build one path, and see what happens over a few weeks. Small, tested changes beat a big launch nobody checked.
